March 4, 1925 - January 2, 2016
Alyce Rosemarie Mueller Mayes passed away on Saturday, January 2nd at her daughters home after a short illness. Alyce was an American Original. Born in Chicago in 1925 the daughter of Warren and Rosemarie Mueller, she graduated from Little Company of Mary Nursing School in 1946. In 1950 she married John Mayes, an aspiring architect and together they built an ultra-modern round house in Glen Ellyn, IL that was distinctive enough to be photographed for Life magazine by famed photographer Gordon Parks in 1955. Alyce and John had two children, a daughter, Diedre Lee Mayes (Koik) of Urbana and a son; Warren Shawn Mayes of Thailand. After her divorce, Alyce moved to Southern California and continued her nursing career there until her retirement in 1985. She moved to Urbana in 1995. Alyce loved being the center of attention; she was always impeccably, if colorfully dressed, and particularly enjoyed tooling around in her gold 1969 Mercedes roadster. She was a bright woman with an opinion on almost everything, which she was happy to share with others. No services as was her wish. She will be interred in Oakdale Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice at 444 W Harding Rd, Springfield, OH 45504. Services entrusted to Vernon Funeral Homes, Urbana, OH.
