Anna Jane (Lancaster) Whetsel, departed this life at age 92 on September 17, 2012 at her home.


She was born in Urbana on June 15, 1920 to Evin and Laura (Richardson) Lancaster who preceded her in death as did her son, Robert Neil Buckney and her sisters, Esther Sunniville, Margaret Jones, Ruth Arnold, Mattie Mack, and Evelyn Crosswhite. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Hilbert Buckney and Raymond Whetsel.


Anna graduated in 1938 from Urbana High School. She retired from government work at DESC after 28 years of service. She was an avid football fan and loved supporting her grandsons and nephews in the sport. She was a life-long member of St. Paul AME Church, where she actively served on the usher board, missionary society, sisterhood and stewardess board until her health would not allow.


Anna leaves to celebrate her life daughters, Ruth ”Toni” Buckney and Teresa Montalvo; 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a host of other relatives including cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends and her constant companion of 18 years, her dog, Lucky. Special remembrances go out to her faithful niece, Juanita Arnold, loving caretaker, Dianna Martin and Heartland Hospice.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana. Home Going services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 with Pastor Bruce Wynn officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers: John Ivan Arnold, Carey Neil Buckney, Lance Bean, Ben Buckney, Spencer Buckney, Joshua Calhoun, LaVante Calhoun, LaVar Calhoun and Obelo Richardson. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the St. Paul AME Church 316 E. Market St., Urbana, Ohio 43078 or to the Cancer Association of Champaign County, P.O. Box 38125, Urbana, Ohio 43078.
