Dr. Carl John Canestraro, 74 of Urbana, died on Friday April 3. He was born on April 23, 1934, in Wellsburg, W. Va., the son of Frances (Pinzone) and John Canestraro. Upon his 1957 return from military service in Korea, he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret (Peg) Ann Emig, also of Wellsburg, West Virginia, originally settling in Canton, Ohio. A graduate of Kent State University (B.A.), University of Akron (M.A.) and East Coast University (PH.D.), Carl and Peg began careers in education and nursing respectively. In 1973 they moved to Urbana, OH. where Carl accepted the position of Asst. Superintendent of Urbana Public Schools.
His joyful and contagious laugh, love of family and genuine delight in others’ well being was his currency. He knew no greater joy than to prepare, share and consume a meal in the company of his many friends – instant bliss. A career educator he challenged those in his charge to achieve excellence yet always accepted their best. Armed with moral character and sound values he never wondered what was right or wrong – he just knew, he just knew. Carl delighted in observing the simple beauty of his garden’s new growth, witnessing a student’s initial triumph or boasting of a grandchild’s classroom or athletic sucess. Multiplied hundreds have been encouraged, motivated and amused by his kind and honest words; he would be well pleased if you would merely pass them on. To know him intimately was a ring-side seat to one of GOD’s many gifts – for the spirit housed within his sturdy frame lived fully and lives on, ideally suited for heaven’s eternal home.
Carl is survived by his sons John (Ceil) Canestraro of Urbana, OH, Gene (Judy) Canestraro of Toledo, OH, Russ (Monica) Canestraro of Dublin, OH, twelve grand children, as well as his five siblings, Don (Jean) Canestraro, Conni Rollo, Rosemary (Rod) McDaniel, Nanci (Greg)Walker and Mary Frances Kowalo; and was preceded in death by his loving spouse Peg, his daughter, Catharine (Timothy) A. Canestraro-Mackey and his parents.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Vernon Funeral Home, 235 Miami St., Urbana. A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Weds. April 8, 2009, at 11:00 am, St. Mary’s’ Church, Urbana, with Fr. Greg Konerman officiating. He will be laid to rest at Oakdale cemetery in Urbana.
In lieu of flowers the family graciously suggests donations be made to the Catherine Canestraro Mackey Memorial Scholarship, Urbana High School, c/o Peoples Savings Bank, 10 Monument Square, Urbana, OH, 43078.
