William Richard “Dick” Chester, 78, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010 in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born December 10, 1931 in Kinnikinnick, OH, the son of William H. and Mona (Brown) Chester.
In 1956, Dick moved to Mechanicsburg to work at Main Hardware. He then started Chester’s appliance store in Mechanicsburg. Dick was employed over the years as a truck driver working for Tullis Trucking and Bulk Transit. After he retired, Dick was employed with Landmark – Heritage.
Dick was a volunteer firefighter for Mechanicsburg Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for 25 years.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. He was an avid sports fan. Dick loved spending time with his family; he thoroughly enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s activities.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sondra (Knapp); his son, Dr. David (Ann Marie) Chester of Palm Bay, FL; daughters, Barbara (Charlie) Boggs of Cable and Kelli (Ted) Black of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Andrea (Art) Johnson of Washington Court House, Jessica Boggs of Columbus, Harrison and Hannah Marie Chester of Palm Bay, FL; sister Viola (Jack) Greenwalt of Kinnikinnick; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. The Mechanicsburg Fire Department will serve as honor guards for the visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010 in the St. Michael Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg with Fr. Larry Gearhart officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Mechanicsburg. Serving as pall bearers, David Knapp, Jack Greenwalt, John Tapp, Joe Schaffner, Jerry Love and Matt Pifher; honorary pall bearers, Bill Miller, Bill Westfall Sr. and the Mechanicsburg Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the capital campaign fund at St. Michael Catholic Church, 40 Walnut Street, Mechanicsburg, OH 43044, or to the Mechanicsburg Fire Fighters Association, Mechanicsburg, OH 43044.
