He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Angelina (Hiltibran) Dunham, four sons, Rick of Springfield, Mike (Kim) of Boaz, Alabama, Randy (Deborah) of Urbana, and Chris Hiltibran of DeGraff; one daughter, Betsy (fiance Brandon Savage), of DeGraff; seven grandchildren, Zachary, Crystal, Ryan, Rachel, Molly, Olivia and Christian, all of Urbana; two step-grandchildren, Drew Hamilton and Nikki Culpepper, of Fyffe, Alabama, 16 great grandchildren and several neices and nephews. In addition, he is survived by four brothers, Phil, Paul, Jerry and Dwight Dunham, all of Urbana; and one sister, Becky James, of Detroit.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his neice, Danette Dunham and nephew, Daniel Dunham.
Dick devoted his entire life to horses and 4-H where he served for more than 60 years as a member, an advisor, leader and mentor. Until this year, he never missed the horse shows at the Champaign County Fair. Dick also performed for years in country bands in Ohio and Nashville where he played bass on several recordings. He coached baseball in the Urbana sports leagues for more than 20 years. When younger, Dick was a regular on the professional rodeo circuit where he competed in bull riding competitions. When he could no longer compete, he became a rodeo clown. He got his greatest satisfaction spending time with his grandchildren and teaching other young people how to ride horses.
Dick was employed at Grimes Manufacturing for more than 25 years where he was a machinist and brake press operator. He most recently was a farm manager for Kloepper Livestock in Anna.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held Saturday, August 14 at 5 P.M. in the Vernon Funeral Home with visitation from 2-5. Following the service his body will be cremated. Dick requested that friends and family wear their favorite western apparel. The family requests that friends consider sharing during the service favorite stories and memories about Dick.
Pallbearers will be Ryan, Zachary and Crystal Dunham, Raymond Dibert, Brandon Savage and Jeff Bair. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Champaign County horse 4-H clubs. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his Dick’s name at the Champaign bank. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com.
