Donna (Ross) Canan, 85 of Urbana, passed away, Monday, January 23, 2017 in the Ohio State University, Ross Heart Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Donna was born in Columbus, Ohio to Donald & Mildred (Chase) Ross. Her parents and only sibling, a brother, Ray Ross preceded her in death. Four children, their wives, husbands, children and great grandchildren, survive; children, Michael (Vicki) Canan, Michele (Vernon) Sloan, Jefferis (Shelly) Canan and Catherine Chadeayne; 10 grandchildren, Noel, Mikola, Aaron, Melissa, Kelly, Matt, Ben, Eric, Amy and Nick; 13 great grandchildren; Some are what are called “step” but to Donna they are all Great. Her family was her greatest treasure and loved more than they will ever know.
Donna graduated from Greenville High School in 1949 after attending 12 schools while her father served as an Army officer in WWII. The survivors of her high school graduation class keep in touch and try to meet as often as possible. She graduated from Urbana University Cum Laude in 1976. Her professional career was as a criminologist, counselor and educator. She worked for Clark County Juvenile Court as a counselor and director of Foster Care, treatment and detention. She also served as a counselor for Springfield Opportunities Industrial center. In the early 80’s she moved to Florida and was a director for the Epilepsy Foundation of N.E. Florida covering 7 counties for 11 yrs. Her last favorite position was for the Jacksonville Board of Education where she taught in two special education schools and on inner city high school. This job placement for these special students was the high lite of her career and she has visited 2 of her students who have been in their same jobs for 20 yrs. Special friends are too numerous to list by name, but who contributed greatly to her life. You know who you are and that she loved and appreciated you all. To name only a few, Patricia Cianalio, Chris Phelps, Donna Rogan, Ting Ting & Family, Carolyn and Dick Schornak, Glen Sloan and Jim Dorsey & Family, etc. etc. etc.
In closing a special thank you to my church families at the Immaculate Conception in North Lewisburg and St. Mary Church in Urbana, Father Larry Gearhart and his staff have given her support during the rough spots through their prayers, good honest support and advice. Most of all Donna would want to thank God for a wonderful life; she lived and loved every minute of it..
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 30, 2017 at St. Mary Church in Urbana with Father Larry Gearhart officiating.
Services are entrusted to VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Donna’s memory to St. Mary Church or to a charity of your choice.
To Cathy Chadeayne and family,
A relationship with “mother” is one of the most cherish relationships we can have. Adjusting to that loss is challenging. The precious memories you have help to console you and time will ease your sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Jeff, Michele, Kathy, and Mike, I am so very sorry for your loss of your mom. Never easy to say good bye. She was a very fun and energetic lady, and I enjoyed being around her. Much love to you all!
