Doris Kathryn Bowers lived a long life that overflowed with her love for people – devotion to her many friends – and appreciation for her loving family. At the age of 98, she passed away, on Thursday, March 15, 2012 in the Hearth and Home with her family by her side. She was born September 7, 1913 in Johnson County Indiana – The second child of Forest and Audra Boles.
Fun loving and loyal, Doris formed many lasting friendships during her school years in Trafalgar, Indiana. After graduation from high school, she attended Indiana Business College. Doris accepted a position with the Federal Land Bank of Louisville, Kentucky and lived away from home for the first time. Her next position was with The Governor’s Commission on Un-Employment Relief in Franklin, Indiana, followed by three years with The Home Insurance Company in Indianapolis.
In 1938, Doris attended a family reunion where she met a guest who was to become her best friend and life-long love. Donald Bowers, an Ohio farmer, courted Doris long-distance for three years. Once married, the couple set up housekeeping on an Ohio farm near Urbana.
Doris and Donald raised one daughter and two sons. In order to remain at home with their children, Doris made and marketed a children’s clothing line under her private label of ”Bow Togs”. In 1956, she accepted a part-time position as secretary for the Champaign County Soil Conservation Service. Entering full-time employment three years later, she worked 20 years as an administrative secretary for The Springfield Leather Products Company, finally retiring in 1978.
Doris, an active member of the Urbana United Methodist, Buck Creek Women’s Club, and Champaign County Quilters Guild, enjoyed her many friends. In recent years, Doris and lady friends met regularly for lunch on Fridays and soon became known to all as ”The Lunch Bunch”.
Although Doris’s husband, Donald, preceded her in death in 1997, Doris remained on the family farm, enjoying the house she and Donald had so lovingly designed and built in the early 1970’s.
Also preceding Doris in death were her parents, one sister, Verna Fern Boles, a brother, Harold W. Boles and a grandson, Joseph Bowers.
Surviving is one daughter, Janet (John) Moss of Austin, TX; her sons, Donald Duane (Gail) Bowers of Venice, FL and Cincinnati and Ronald Wayne Bowers of Dallas, TX; 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Doris’s family wish to extend thanks to the staff and residents of Hearth and Home for making Doris’s last year’s comfortable and enjoyable. The family also, thanks Acclaim Hospice for their caring service in recent months.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2012 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.
