Dorothy M. Shafer (Lockwood) Black, 85 of Urbana, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 06, 2011 in Vancrest of Urbana.


She was born May 24, 1925 in Champaign County, Ohio the daughter of the late Harley and Viola (Coleman) Shafer.


Dorothy was a member of the Urbana Friends Church. She enjoyed camping, crocheting, quilting and caring for children. She took care of over 40 foster children. Dorothy and Edwin lived in Florida for a number of years before coming back to Ohio. Later in life she volunteered at the sterling house.


She is survived by her daughters; Rose Marie (Richard) Heberling of West Liberty, Shirley (Charles) Penhorwood of North Lewisburg, Judy Carney of Urbana; her sons, Jack (Clara) Lockwood of Urbana and Danny Lockwood of South Carolina; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; her sister Doris Short of Urbana, numerous nieces & nephews of several generations and a host of friends.


She is preceded in death by her parents, her 1st husband of 44 years, Edwin Lockwood and her 2nd husband of 7 years, Ralph “Bus” Black, her daughters, Jeannine Traylor and Marsha Arnold, her grandsons, Johnny Lockwood and Kevin Piper, her great granddaughter, Melia Brancato, her sisters, Opal Burris, Helen Roach and Betty Dannaker and her brothers, James, Marion, Robert, Russell, Harold, George, Donald and Claude.


The family of Dorothy would like to thank Vancrest and Vitas Hospice for their loving care and spending time with Dorothy.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio; where funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Chess officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery Cable, Ohio.
