Dorothy Marie Oliver 85, of Mechanicsburg, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, April 14, 2012 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana, Ohio.
She was born December 22, 1926 in New Hope, Brown County, Ohio, the daughter of Dale and Gladys (Cox) Thompson. Her family later moved to West Jefferson, Ohio. Dorothy married William H. Oliver, July 7, 1956; He died December 7, 1971. She worked for many years at Columbus Paper Factory and other jobs including being a caregiver for many children and elderly.
Dorothy was a devote Christian her entire life. She read the bible daily. She was a longtime member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ in Christian Union and the Lady’s Prayer Band. Most recently she was attending the Calvary Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with family and making crafts. She enjoyed collecting owls and ducks. She was a member of Mechanicsburg Active Citizens and enjoyed spending time with other residents of Mechanicsburg Village Apartments. For over 50 years she has had the nickname of ”Ducky” after a nephew could not say her name. She was still called Aunt and Grandma ”Ducky”. In her early years she had talent of drawing and art. She took a home course from Art Instruction Inc. but never pursued a career in art as she easily could of.
She is survived by her sons, David (Sandy) Oliver of Bellefontaine, Robert Oliver of West Liberty, and Stanley Oliver of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Maria, William, Shana, Bobbie Jean and Tiffany, great grandchildren, Addison, Ayden, Dusty, James, Dillon, Rowan, Kendal, Keegan and Hazel; her sister-in-laws, Rochelle (Jerry) Thompson-Kidd of Mechanicsburg, Lucille Harter of Riverside, Ca. and Doris Gaver of St. Cloud, Fla; nieces and nephews Dale Thompson, Donald Thompson, Doreen Grow, Dalesa Combs, Lance Armstrong, John Armstrong, Joseph Harter; many great nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone who had helped her in recent time to include staff of Vancrest Care Center, staff of passport program, and special thanks to Jerry and Rochelle Thompson-Kidd.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Oliver; her son, James W. Oliver; brother, Dale Thompson Jr.; sisters, Clara and Beverly Jean; step-father, Grover Gaver; step-brother, Donald Gaver and 2 great nieces.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the Skillman, McDonald & Vernon Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg.
Funeral services to celebrate her homecoming will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012 in the New Life Ministries, 11160 Rosedale Rd. Mechanicsburg, Ohio with Pastors, Rev. Kerry Lynch, Rev. Wayne Lewis and Rev. Richard Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mutual. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com
