Essie Marie Harris, 79, of Urbana passed over into the loving arms of her Savior on April 21, 2016. She was our “Real Life Angel”.
She was born January 20, 1937 in Martin County, Kentucky the daughter of Ercle and Goldie (Johnson) McNeely.
Essie is survived by her daughter, Debra S. Atwell; her son, Mike (Rhonda) Harris; her grandchildren, Deanna Marie Atwell, Carlita (Marc) Reisinger and “Skeeter” Harris; her great- grandchildren, Morgan Moughler, Nicholas Moughler, Alanee Horsley and Keegan Reisinger; her sisters, Ola (Ralph) Rasnake, Juanita Russell, Patsy Adams, Patty Norris, Diane (Harold) Moody and Cathy Marcum; her brothers, Steve (Lisa) McNeely and Junior McNelly; several nieces and nephews as well as two adopted sisters, Jackie Fischer and Susan (Dennis) Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband’s, Joseph A. Harris and Dee Atwell; her parents, Ercle and Goldie McNeely; her brothers, Joe, Wendell, David, Jimmy, Billy and Earl McNeely.
Essie owned and operated Debbie’s Truck Stop in the early 70’s and is still known as the best cook in the county. She was well loved by everyone who met her. Children especially were drawn to her. Essie was a member and Sunday School teacher at the Mechanicsburg Freewill Baptist Church and previously at the South Charleston and Catawba Freewill Baptist Church. God had blessed her with a beautiful voice and many people were blessed by her singing. Heaven has welcomed and rejoiced at the arrival of our dear Essie, and although we know we will see her again, we will miss her beautiful smile, loving disposition and open arms.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Monday, April 25, 2016 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 26, 2017 in the funeral home with Pastor Jesse Walters & Rev. John Long officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. We are so sorry to hear of Miss Essie’s passing. We’re getting up there in years ourselves, but if there is anything we can do, please don’t hesitate to call. I know Jackie will miss her sweet neighbor and friend.
