Visitation Monday, December 28, 2015 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM at Vernon Funeral Home
Gail Lamar Evans went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 18, 2015, at his home in Sunrise, Florida, after a lengthy illness. Gail was born on January 27, 1942, in Urbana, Ohio, to John D. and Bernice Walker Evans.
Gail graduated from Urbana High School in 1961. In that year he was chosen, “Player of the Year” and “All Ohio First Team” in basketball. He also led his team to the “State Championship Runner-Up” title against Portsmouth High School. His talents were numerous and diverse. He tried out for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team as a pitcher. He went on to attend Ohio Northern University with a scholarship awarded for his basketball abilities. He was a stand-out golfer most of the time with scores in the low 70s. For many years Gail played slow pitch softball in the Urbana and Springfield areas. The opponent teams always feared his ability to hit home runs with ease.
While in high school he worked as a dispatcher for the Urbana Police Department. He later served as a police officer on the same department. He moved on to serve Greene County as a Sheriff’s Deputy. After working in law enforcement for many years, Gail changed his interests to becoming a claims adjuster for a few major insurance companies until his retirement.
He leaves to mourn, his wife in Sunrise, Florida; a son, Steven Evans (Susan), from Columbus, Ohio; five daughters, Gaye Lynn Evans of Sunrise, Florida, Tami Evans of Lurry, Tennesee, Jamie (Brandon) Evans of Delaware, Ohio, Brenda Evans and Lori Evans Hamilton, both of Columbus; a sister, Donna Evans Weaver of Grove City, Ohio; two brothers, John Evans, (Peggy) of Columbus, and Van Evans, (Mary) of Urbana; seven grand- children, two great grand-children and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Gail was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joan Evans Washington; and a brother, Hugh Walker Evans.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 28, 2015 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana with Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana. Condolences may be expressed to the family atwww.vernonfh.com.
