George L. Nicol, 85 of Urbana, passed away Friday, February 8, 2008 in his residence.
He was born January 5, 1923 in Irwin, Ohio the son of the late Henry and Mable (Stierhoff) Nicol.
George served his country during WWII in the United States Army and served in the infantry in Japan and in Luzon in the Philippines. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marysville, Ohio. He retired in 1987 after 40 years of service as an area Manager for Columbia Gas.
George was very active in the community serving on many boards as well as a member of the Urbana Lions Club, Kiwanis Club of Springfield, Gasco Club, Regional Transit Authority, past president of the Urbana Chamber of Commerce, participated on the St. Rte. 68 bypass committee .
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years who he married November 20, 1948, Jeane (Hamilton) Nicol; his daughters, Kathleen Nicol of Columbus and Mary Ellen (William) Walters of Urbana; his sons, Wayne (Jan) Nicol of Urbana and Brian (Robbin) of Urbana; grandchildren, Chad, Selena, Jason, Sherri, Samantha, Cory and Andy; great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexis, Kendle and Reese; his sisters, Helen (Ernest) LeVan of West Mansfield and Hazel (Ross) Ingram of Marysville, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews of several generations.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ross Ingram.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 in the Vernon Funeral Home Urbana, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in the St. John’s Lutheran Church 12809 State Route 736 Marysville, OH. Pastor John Fair will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
