Hershell Burkes, 81, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Mercy Health Urbana Hospital.
Hershell was born February 21, 1941, in Sitka, Kentucky the son of the late Clarence and Minnie Burkes. Hershell attended Mechanicsburg High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Janet Jones. They were married in 1959. Hershell worked at White Westinghouse until they closed, then worked for Buckeye Duplicating & Dye retiring from driving school bus for Mechanicsburg.
He loved working with kids, coaching the Peanut League and then went on to coach the Little League. Hershell loved to hunt, fish and camp. He would take his boys along with the neighbor boys to the lake every summer weekend and snowmobiling in the winter. He taught his sons how to work on cars and then continued this with his granddaughter Jennifer.
The most important part of Hershell's life was accepting Jesus in "59" and being born again. He loved sharing this journey with everyone. He was a member of the Parkview Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg for over 60 years. He held many offices, such as: Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, Clerk and Maintenance. He assisted in building a Church from an old schoolhouse. Then later helped build a Fellowship Hall and bathrooms.
Hershell is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janet (Jones) Burkes; his sons, Bruce Burkes and Brad Burkes; his granddaughter, Jen (Lucas) Hannah; great granddaughter Cadence Schaeffer; his great grandson, Collin Long; his brothers, Mike Burkes and Tony Burkes; brothers-in-law, Clem Ankrom and Bill Jones; sisters-in-law, Carole May and Doris Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Steve Long; sister, Doris Ankrom; brothers-in-law, Clarence "Deak" Jones and Robert May; sisters-in-law, Helen Wheeler, Lowella Foss, Ruth Foss, and Miriam Jones.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg, Ohio with Pastor Garry Grim officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Ron and Pearl Finney.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mutual, Ohio.
