James Lee Hawkins, 50, of Urbana, went to heaven Saturday, January 29th, 2011. He was born and raised in Bloomingdale, Ohio. There he camped, played ice hockey, listened to music, and played guitar. He was a paperboy for the Herald Star for 8 years. He played hockey in Wheeling where he was voted Rookie of the Year. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Wintersville HS in 1979, and with a BS (cum laude) in Communications from Ohio University in 1983. Over the years, he was employed as a circulation manager for the Steubenville Herald Star, and the Piqua Daily Call, as an agent for Prudential Insurance, and as an ad executive for KISS Country. He most recently worked as an award-winning electronic media sales consultant for Sales Development Services in Westerville. He coached his children in soccer and ice hockey. He is remembered for his sense of humor, organizing games (National Yard Hockey Championship), entertaining family and friends, babysitting his granddaughters, watching the NHL, Jets, and Packers, playing guitar, and spending time outdoors; hiking and kayaking. Throughout his life he was an animal lover, and always had at least 1 stray dog as a pet. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Arlene (Lawlor) Hawkins. He is also survived by: his children, Ian (Jeanine) Hawkins of Kettering, Derek Hawkins of Urbana, and Mary Hawkins of Quincy; his precious granddaughters, Maddy Hawkins and Quinnie Hawkins; his parents Raymond and Ruth Hawkins; sister Patty (Hawkins) Felmet of Bloomingdale, Ohio; brother Dennis (Helen) Hawkins of Maine, OH, numerous extended family; and best friends, Mark Hanish and Rick Giroux. Calling hours will be Saturday from 3-6, with a service following, from 6-7 at VERNON FUNERAL HOME, 235 Miami St. in Urbana. Wearing sports jerseys is encouraged during calling hours. Memorial Contributions may be made to: PAWS Animal Shelter, or Cancer Association of Champaign County.
