James M. ”Mack” Locke, of Mechanicsburg, passed on to eternal peace and rest on 4-24-2012, after a long struggle with lung disease. He outlived all the doctors’ predictions for many years, but his grief over the loss of his beloved wife of 63 years, Naomi, on 2-9-2012, and his beloved son and farming partner, Barry, on 8-6-2011, took its toll.
He was born to Florence and Frank Locke on February 19, 1927.
Mack lost his father at a young age and then began a lifetime of hard work and determination to achieve his goal of owning a farm. He leaves the legacy of that farm to his surviving family. He worked very hard, long hours and for several years he sheared sheep to supplement his farm income.
He loved his family, he loved the land, and he loved animals, especially draft horses. The last evening he spent with his son Barry was at the Ohio State Fair draft horse competition. He passed on the love of country living to his children.
He had many friends and truly never knew a stranger. He would talk with new acquaintances until he established a connection with them, either through farming or mutual friends or relatives. Naomi always said ”he knows everyone”.
As a lifetime member of Catawba UMC, he served as trustee for many years. He and Naomi also enjoyed attending Mutual UMC.
He leaves his surviving children, Michael Locke and Cindy Rucker of Mechanicsburg; Coleen Locke of Springfield; and daughter-in-law, Pam Locke of Mechanicsburg.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dottie (Paul) Good. His sisters, Marcy Coberly and Alice Krugh preceded him in death.
Missing him will be grandchildren Matt (Becky) Locke, Christopher Locke, Jamie Rucker (Scott Sheerin) and Sean Locke; along with great grandchildren Connor Clark, Joel Clark, Kylie Locke, Johnathan Smith, Nikole Locke, Nathan Locke, Justin Locke, and Cody Locke. Missing her ”Pa” will be great granddaughter Abigail Sheerin.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews who fondly remember time spent at the farm. He had a special bond with his nephew Larry Krugh.
He will also be missed by his caregiving family members, Sue Alfrey, Shuavon Gilbert and Shelly Knox.
The family wishes to thank all the loyal friends and church members who visited him during his illness. The family also thanks the special private caregivers he had while at home, and the staff members at VanCrest and Forest Glen who befriended him. He loved you all. Mack and his family were also served by a wonderful team from Odessey Hospice during his final week.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg with Pastor Richard Smyers officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Vernon-Asbury Cemetery, Catawba.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Vernon Funeral Home to be placed in a memorial fund that will purchase a 4-H/FFA club lamb at the 2012 Clark County Fair. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com.
