Jill Smith, 62, dearly beloved wife and mother, surrounded by her immediate family, passed away at 6:26 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2016, after a lengthy hospital stay, of complications due to ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome).
Jill Jacqueline Lewis was born December 1, 1953, in Springfield, Ohio, the daughter of Jacque and Jean Lewis. She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1972. She attended Defiance College for one year, and after several jobs and a move to Miami, Florida, she returned and settled permanently in Ohio. Deciding to continue her college education, she enrolled at Urbana University and graduated in 1992 with a BA in English. She completed a Masters in English at Wright State University in 1994, and worked at several different jobs until forced into medical disability retirement in late 1997. But her true interest as an occupation and a calling was real estate, and Jill was a landlord for over 30 years. After maintaining various homes in North Hampton and Springfield, Jill and her family moved to Urbana in January 2001, and over the next six years, she and her husband were foster parents to twenty-one children.
Jill was an active member of the Champaign County Preservation Alliance (CCPA), and her house was featured in the annual summer home tour in June 2015. Her family hosted a number of band parties for the UHS Marching Band, and for many years attended the First Presbyterian Church. Jill liked to travel, and her favorite vacation spot was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was an avid reader, enjoyed movies, and donated to various charities on a regular basis. She had an uncanny talent for interior decoration, and looked forward every holiday season to making her home festive and welcoming. Jill was an outstanding cook, but she also enjoyed lunching at Fazoli’s whenever she could. Over the summer months, weather permitting, she enjoyed nightly swims in her pool. Despite suffering from both heart and lung maladies, she was a very vital woman, with a strong work ethic, solid moral character, and a fierce devotion to her family. She celebrated 25 years of marriage with her husband on July 12, 2016, and was looking forward to his retirement, when a week later, she left their home for the last time and began her final hospital visit.
Jill is survived by her devoted husband Tom; children Brian (Marissa) Tregoning, Justin Christopher Lautzenheiser, Doug Lautzenheiser, Emily Smith, Amelia Smith, and Frances Smith; brother John (Kathy) Lewis; brother Jacques (Katherine) Wyatt; dear family friend John Lautzenheiser; grandchildren Caroline and William Tregoning; and various cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her father Jacque in 2001 and her mother Jean in 2008.
Memorial service will held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, 235 Miami St., Urbana, Ohio. The family will receive from 11 -1 pm prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those willing to express condolences make donations in Jill’s name to a charitable organization of their choosing. Jill was passionately committed to giving to others and contributed regularly to the World Wildlife Federation, Prison Fellowship, Samaritan’s Purse, Billy Graham, Angel Tree, the Nature Conservancy, and many more. Those who prefer may certainly select a floral tribute.
Jill left an indelible mark on the lives of many people in her brief time on this planet, and she will be dearly, dearly missed.

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me”

Molly, Mom and I were sorry to read about Peggy in the paper. We always enjoyed her company at the Y or when we all went out for lunch. Mom and I are planning on meeting the lunch group one Wed afternoon. But, so far one or the other of us is usually going to the doctor. Hope you and family are doing fine.

You have my deepest condolences in the death of your loved one. Jill was in my high school graduating class. I also had her son, Brian, in fifth or sixth grade at Northwestern.
May God bless you all with His Love, care, comfort and peace. “May the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself, and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace, gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you.” II Thess. 2:1,17

Dear Tom, When Rita and I read Jill’s obituary in today’s paper, we were moved to learn many things about her fulfilling life. She will be much missed. Meanwhile, we think of you and your daughters, and can offer not only condolences for your sorrow but also prayers for Jill’s soul.

Dear Distant Family,
I’m sorry to hear about our loss of Jill. I know we are distant family, so I don’t know most of you personally. I had just talked to her for the first time a few months ago even though I knew of her as family over the last few years. She was a very thoughtful and wonderful person. We will never forget how she helped out our family in a huge way by simply being sweet enough to send medical records. This life saving favor will never be forgotten! I wanted you all to know how she impacted so many of us in the family in this loving way. Our deepest sympathies are with you.
