John Robert “Bob” Smith, 74 of Mechanicsburg passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 in his residence, surrounded by his family. Bob’s last hours were brightened by hugs and kisses from his granddaughter, Taylor.
Bob was born March 10, 1934 in Resca, Ohio, a lifelong farmer and resided in the Mechanicsburg area most of his life; the last 27 years on Stringtown Rd., Mechanicsburg. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to all those in need. He was a proud veteran and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. His wife of 40 years Rose (Hunter) Smith will sorely miss “Old Pappy”. Also surviving are 3 daughters and 1 son, Jana (Arthur) Sawyer of Mechanicsburg, Kathy (Steve) Green of S. Charleston, Bobbie (Rick) Daniels of Mechanicsburg and Gerald “Little Dragon” Smith of Washington Court House; Bob’s Mother, Mrs. Candace Plant of Plain City; his brothers and sisters with heavy hearts are; Eldon (Rita) Smith of Mechanicsburg, Betty (Phil) Gooden of La Grange, GA, Ron (Joan) Smith of Plain City, Ed (Carol) Smith of Springfield, Mary Wells of Plain City; loving grandchildren include, Crystal, Arthur & John Sawyer, Jimmy, Robert and Amanda Parson, Taylor, Kailyn, Nick and Nathan Daniels, 2 great granddaughters, Joslyne and Angel Sawyer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews of several generations.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Oman H. Smith in 1944 and Elsie (Hall) Smith in 1935 and his sister, Regina Beatty in 1995.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2008 in the funeral home with Pastor Cindee Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
