John Scott Speer, 81, of Urbana passed away, Monday, January 17, 2011 in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 1, 1929 in Cambridge, Ohio. John attended Muskingham College. He was employed as the manager of the Quality systems department for Grimes, Modern Technology Corporation and for North American Aviation.
John loved airplanes; he soloed at the age of 16 and continued flying for many years. He was an avid fan of NASCAR racing and he enjoyed football and basketball. John was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana. He taught Sunday school, was a Youth Fellowship Advisor, a Deacon, a Trustee and was a representative to the Miami Presbytery in Dayton. He was a member of the Harmony Lodge # 8 F. &A.M. and Kiwanis.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Speer, his daughter, Colette Dawn (Christopher) Maple of New Bern, North Carolina; his grandchildren, Jennifer Whitehead, Allison Harris, & Margaret Maple; his great grandchildren, Joseph Paul Judy and Cambria Sue Whitehead and several nieces & nephews.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Edna Pearl Speer and his daughter, Pamela Sue Ogg.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 4-7p.m. in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Masonic services with Harmony Lodge #8 F&AM will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 Thursday, January 20, 2011 in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating. There will be a visitation hour at 9:00 a.m. in the parlor proceeding the service.
