Joseph A. Harris 72, of Urbana, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana.


He was born May 31, 1937 in Cincinnati Ohio, the son of Alfred & Elsie (Graf) Harris.


He graduated in 1956 of Catholic Center High School in Springfield. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army. He retired from Navistar in 1997. He was a faithful member of Freewill Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg. Joe also volunteered at South Elementary School in Urbana and enjoyed going to the YMCA. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman. He loved to tease and was known to be a jokester, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.


Joseph is survived by his wife, whom he dearly loved, Essie M. (McNeely) Harris, who he married February 26, 1972; his children, Caron (Randy) Cobb of Lakeland, Fla, Debra Atwell of Urbana, Mary Reid of North Carolina, Michael J. (Rhonda) Harris of Urbana, John P. Harris of Lakeland, FL; his grandchildren, Matthew Cobb, Carlita Horsley & Deanna Atwell, Roy, Amanda, Angela & Eric Reid, Andrew Harris, Dustin & Chelsey Rupp &Kylie Harris; four great grandchildren and one on the way, including Nicholas and Morgan Moughler; brothers Jack (Chris) Harris and Jim (Pat) Harris of Summerfield, FL; numerous nieces & nephews.


Joseph is preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents who raised him, John & Elsie Graf and one brother, Jerry Harris.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2009 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 in the funeral home with Rev. Jesse Walters and Rev. John Long officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana. Memorial contributions in Joseph’s memory may be made to the Shriner’s Burn Hospital, 3229 Burnet Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45229-3095.
