Lucille Elizabeth Middleton
Lucille E. Middleton 89 of Cable, the pioneer mother of Lawnview School and the Matriarch of our family, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in Springfield Regional Hospital, High St Campus.
Lucille was born November 9, 1919 in West Jefferson, Ohio the daughter of the late Swan & Hortense (Anderson) Gregg. She had come from a large family of 5 brothers and 2 sisters; all have preceded her, expect her sister, Freida. Lucille graduated of Cable High School in 1937. She worked at the Murphy’s five and ten cent store and then in the 1940’s she served as post master at the Post office in Cable for several years. On Nov. 21, 1945, she married John E. Middleton. Together they shared 60 happy years of marriage on their family tree farm.
Lucille along with Woodrow Purdy, obtained money through the Champaign County Commissions to start Lawnview School in 1954; Lucille dedicated her life to her daughter Zita and all of the mentally handicapped children throughout the county.
Lucille furthered her education in the early 70’s and in 1973, she graduated from Wittenburg University. In 1978, the Ohio Association for Retarded Citizens honored her as Teacher of the year. In 1985, Lucille was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.
Lucille was a member of the Cable United Methodist Church.
Lucille leaves to mourn her sons, “John” Jack (Janet) Middleton of Mechanicsburg & Marion (Toby) Middleton of Cable; daughters, Jane (David) Runyan of Bellefontaine & Zita Middleton of Urbana, 8 loving and devoted granddaughters, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter, her sister, Frieda Ober of Urbana, as well as, numerous nieces & nephews of several generations.
Lucille also, leaves many beloved friends and “family” that she acquired at the Sterling House of Urbana. The family extends their gratitude for all of the loving care given to our Mother during her stay.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009 in the Freshwater, McDonald & Vernon Funeral Home, North Lewisburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in the funeral home with the Rev. Joyce McKeever officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11:30, prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in Jenkins Chapel Cemetery, Cable, Ohio.
