Margaret (Peg) Ann Canestraro, 74 of Urbana, died on Friday, January 2. She was born on January 29, 1934, in Wellsburg, W. Va., the daughter of Angela (Barth) and Eugene Emig. She graduated from Mount de Chantal High School in Wheeling, West Virginia and was a registered nurse completing her collegiate training at Wheeling Hospital. Upon his return from Korea in 1957 she married her childhood sweetheart, Carl J. Canestraro and they settled in Canton Ohio, to begin their careers and family. In 1973 they moved to Urbana, OH. where Carl pursued his career in education as Asst. Superintendent of Urbana Public Schools and Peg continued her nursing career – first at Mercy Hospital in Urbana and later providing home health care and medical services for the Champaign County Health Department. She assisted in the early development of county-wide health care for those confined to their home.
Her elegance was her simplicity and she wore a grace uncluttered by competition, the need of pedigree or pride. A devout Catholic, wife and mother she served all with pure motives and tolerance. Her energy and quiet cleverness may have only been equaled by her conviction that the needs of others exceed any of her earthly concerns. Those lucky enough to know this plain-spoken woman found honesty, and truth undisguised by self promotion. Her uncommon acceptance of the gift of each day, and her daily encounter with her living Savior, resonated from her complete devotion to family, friends or those in need of comfort and care. She is survived by her husband Carl, her sons John (Ceil) Canestraro of Urbana, OH, Gene (Judy) Canestraro of Toledo, OH, Russ (Monica) Canestraro of Dublin, OH, twelve grand children, as well as her siblings: Dorothy Welcher, of Ormond Beach FL., Rita Ramsey, of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Gene (Sharon) Emig of Jasper,. Ga. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Catherine (Timothy) A. Canestraro-Mackey and her parents.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Vernon Funeral Home, 235 Miami St., Urbana. A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Weds. Jan. 7, 2009, at 10:00 am, St. Mary’s’ Church, Urbana, with Fr. Greg Konerman officiating. She will be laid to rest at Oakdale cemetery in Urbana.
In lieu of flowers the family graciously suggests donations be made to the Catherine Canestraro Mackey Memorial Scholarship, Urbana High School, c/o Peoples Savings Bank, 10 Monument Square, Urbana, OH, 43078.
