Marion Vernon Brooks, 81, of Urbana passed away January 5, 2010 in Port Orange, Florida. He was born in Urbana, OH on July 25, 1928 to the late Wilber V. and Olive M. Cromwell Brooks.
He was a graduate of the class of 1948 of Urbana High School. He was employed for 25 years at the Quality Creamery in Urbana, where he met his best friend and wife of 59 years, Martha Jacks Brooks. Marion retired from International Harvester is Springfield, Ohio in 1993 after 28 years of employment. He was currently the owner of Brooks Racing Tires in Urbana and a dealer for Hoosier Racing Tires (Lakeville, Indiana) for 54 years. Marion was on the Board of directors at Kil-Kare Speedway in Xenia. He was a Champaign County Shriner, a member of the Masonic Lodge Harmony #8, a 32? Scottish Rite Member of the Valley of Dayton and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1215. He attended the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Urbana, Ohio.
Marion is survived by his wife, Martha Brooks; daughter and son-in-law Rhonda (Chip) Sizemore of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; grandchildren Spc. Marshall Travis Sizemore (Iraq), Amanda Sizemore of Urbana and Wyatt Sizemore of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; and brother and sister-in-law Arnold (Joyce) Brooks of Urbana, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters; Nora Katherine (Brooks) Brugh, and Wilda Imogene (Brooks) McCain.
Marion will long be remembered for his love of short track auto racing, his respectfulness, gentlemanliness and his caring for others. He made friends from all over the country, especially racing friends. He will always be remembered for wearing his purple suspenders, and greeting people with a smile and his favorite phrase: “How are you doing today?”

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana with Masonic services at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in the Church of Christ in Christian Union, Urbana, OH with Rev. Charles Runion, Rev. David Van Hoose, Rev. Tom Amlin and Rev. Carl Ogden officiating. Entombment will follow at Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana.
A luncheon will be served at the church following the services.
