Melville E. “Mel” Furrow 86 of Urbana, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009 in Mercy McAuley Center Urbana.
He was born July 7, 1922 in Pemberton, Ohio the son of Rev. Samuel & Elizabeth (Richardson) Furrow.
Mel served his country in the 104th Infantry division during WWII earning 2 bronze stars and a purple heart. He was a member of the 1st Baptist Church, a chairman, Trustee and sang in the choir for 60 years.
He was a member of the Master Champaign Lodge 525, Excellent High Priest Chapter 34, Urbana Council Master #59 (Illustrious Master), Raper Commandry 19, Recorder for Raper Commandary for 20 years, President Temple Association and Knight of the York Cross of Honor. Mel retired from McLaughlin Jewelers after over 32 years of service. He enjoyed tinker around the house, remodeling, woodworking and camping.
He is survived by his wife 66 years, Joan (Rush) Furrow, his sons, Larry E. Furrow of Urbana and Daniel (Judy) Furrow of Springfield; his grandson, David (Melissa) Furrow of Springfield; his great grandchildren, Austin and Sarah Furrow.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the wonderful care given to their father by the doctors, nurses, aides & other staff members of the Mercy McAuley Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother, Lela (Houser) Furrow.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Brian Wonn and Rev. Cliff Kissinger officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
