Merrill E. Rutan, 85, of Mechanicsburg, passed away, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in Hospice of Dayton.


He was born March 31, 1927 in Mechanicsburg, the son of the late Rolland F. and Phyllis E. (Perry) Rutan.


Merrill was born and raised on Bullard-Rutan Road. He graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1945 where he played football. Merrill worked all of his life as a farmer and also retired from the United States Postal Service.


He enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds Baseball team, bowling (even bowling a 300 game at age 63), fishing, playing cards, solving 3-D puzzles, trap shooting and traveling to Florida in the winter where he played on a billiard team. Merrill was a member of the Mechanicsburg Lodge #113, F&AM and the Caroline Chapter #39, Order of the Eastern Star.


He is survived by his wife, E. Angela Rutan; children, Sharma C. Fox of Kettering; Kevin E. Rutan, of Mechanicsburg and Kendra (Herbert) Bryant of Centerville; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Eloise (Howard) Johnson and Corrine (Robert) Dean; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Calvin P. Rutan and Lester V. Rutan and his sister, Ardith Arlene Rutan.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 – 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD, & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. Masonic services followed by Eastern Star services will take place at 8 p.m. following visitation. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Harley Roston officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
