Nancy Howard Cowan
Nancy Alura Howard Cowan, age 87 of Urbana, passed away, Thursday, August 06, 2009 in
Mercy Memorial Hospital Urbana. She was born on December 30, 1921 in Woodstock, OH to the late Paul and Helen (Lincoln) Howard. In 1942, Nancy married Owen “Ottie” Cowan (who passed on June 8, 2009) of Kingscreek, OH. When Ottie returned from WWII, they settled in Urbana.
Nancy was active in music her entire life. She played the piano from the age of 7 until just a few days ago. She shared the gift of her musical talent in many ways throughout her life, including: playing the piano, singing in the choir, and directing the handbell choir at the Urbana United Methodist Church; playing the piano for many Urbana High School musical productions and also for Eastern Star; singing in the Sweet Adelines; and most recently bringing back enjoyable memories for people at the Sterling House, Hearth and Home, and the McAuley Center.
During her life, Nancy worked at Desmond Stevens, International Harvester, the Urbana Daily Citizen, and Grimes Mfg. She was an active participant in the Urbana United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star and Althea Club.
Surviving family includes: her sons, John Cowan of Urbana, Paul (Carol Hegenderfer) Cowan of Rochester, NY and Bruce Cowan of Urbana; her daughter, Amy (Frank) Ennis of Albuquerque, NM; her grandchildren, Jeff and Sara Cowan of Rochester, NY and Mandy Ennis of Albuquerque, NM.
Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Anne Cowan Pavlik and her siblings, Lois Howard Nichols, Lenore Howard Kerr and Noel Howard.
Following her wishes her body will be cremated.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:30a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009 in the Urbana United Methodist Church; where a Memorial Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Paul Jones officiating.
