December 25, 1942 - January 2, 2015
Nikki Jo Mills, 72, went to be with our Lord God on January 2, 2015. She was born in Barberton, Ohio on December 25, 1942 to the late Mary and Edward Gerry.
On November 10, 1962, she married Larry Mills, and he survives along with their children; David (Jeanne) Mills of Xenia, Marc (Lisa) Mills of Bellefontaine, and Denise (Keith) Norris of Urbana. Nikki was a loving Grandmother to 8 grandchildren; Amanda Nischwitz, Kyle Mills, Alex Mills, David McGuire, Jace Mills, Dustin Norris, Austin Norris, Aubrey Norris and 3 great grandchildren; Devin Salyers, Adelyne Salyers and Jessilynn Mills. Nikki was proceeded in death by her parents, Mary and Edward Gerry, daughter, Deborah Marie Mills, brother, Louis Gerry and sister, Edna Gerry Finn.
Nikki loved life and anyone who knew her would agree! She graduated from Barberton High School and from the Akron School of Nursing. After completing her education, she married her husband of 52 years, Larry Mills and began a full life of activities. Nikki adored her four children and participated in their busy schedules while working as a nurse. Her career included working in hospitals, physician offices, clinics and nursing homes. After retiring from nursing, Nikki also worked at the Champaign County Sheriff Office, It Figures gym and the American Red Cross. While serving with the Red Cross, she and her husband Larry went to Louisiana to give aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Nikki was gifted to take anything and create it into an item of beauty. Her flower gardens, sewing and home crafts reflect the beauty she shared with everyone. A lifelong member of the Catholic Church, her faith was demonstrated daily as she cared for the needs of others. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.”
A Celebration of Life will be held at the family’s convenience this week with Hospice Chaplain, Jim Moeller officiating. Services are entrusted to VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Nikki’s memory to the Community Mercy Hospice, 444 W. Harding Rd, Springfield, OH 45504. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com
Nikki and I walked across the bridge in Barberton to high school. I remember when Nikki wanted to be a nun, but then came to U.L.Light and we were classmates there, too. Crossing the bridge, Larry would honk his horn and motion for Nikki to come over to his car and he would give her a ride home from school. So sorry to Larry and the family for your loss!
So surprised and so sad!!!!! We are in Florida and didn’t know anything… Our thoughts and prayers are with you Larry, Denise, Marc and David. Love and Light to you all, sarah
