Oney Joseph, 90 of Mechanicsburg went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in his residence.
He was born October 29, 1920 in Breathitt, KY, the son of the late Ashford and Fannie (Oney) Joseph.
Oney served his country in the Army National Guard where he was commended for his exceptional service. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, especially growing sunflowers. Oney also loved his dogs, Abby and Shadow and spending time with his special companion, Emma.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy Compton and Rita Finley; grandsons, Chris (Nicole) Compton, Pern, Emory and Guy Finley. He will also be greatly missed by his special companion of 25 years, Emma Russell and her family, Cheryl (John) Crager, Angie (Chuck) Smiddy, Virginia (Don) Hanna, Andrea Lewis (Jack Brown), Sandy Anderson, Donald (Miriam) Russell, Marvin Russell, Walter (Elizabeth) Russell and Bruce (Sheila) Russell; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Oney is preceded in death by his wife, Marie Joseph; son, Jim Joseph; sisters, Marie (Chet) Ray, Lora (Frank) Patrick and Rosalee (Bill) Stapleton; brother, James (Angela) Joseph; son-in-law, Scott Finley.
To Grandpa Oney, Thank you for your hand to help her up! Thank you for your ear to hear her talk. Thank you for your love when she never thought she could love again. Thank you for being a friend when she just wanted to know that you cared. Thank you for being the man you were to the woman that you loved. Thank you for being the Grandpa that my Grandma needed in her life.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor David Smiddy officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
