Opal M. Violet, 94 of Mechanicsburg, passed away, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 5, 1916 in Lawrence County, Kentucky and when she was 16 her family moved to Mechanicsburg. Opal graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1936. After graduation, on November 12, 1936 she married Charles H. Violet together they raised 5 children on a farm just outside of Mechanicsburg. After her family was grown she started working at Grimes; where she retired after 14 years of service. Using her earnings from Grimes she enjoyed traveling all over the world.
In her later years, she enjoyed making quilts that she would give to her family and friends using a quilt frame that was given to her by her husbands’ grandmother. Opal was a kind, caring and giving person who will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Moore of Salem Township, her sons, Don (Helen) Violet of Urbana, John (Delores) Violet of Springfield and Michael (Debbie) Violet of Urbana; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vessie and Carrie (Moore) Jordan; her husband, Charles H. Violet; her daughter, Pam Nixon; grandson, Richard Violet; her sisters, Wava Shelpman and Fern Schneider.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, 2010 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON in Mechanicsburg. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Linden Good officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
