Owen “Ottie” D. Cowan, 89 of Urbana, passed away, Monday, June 8, 2009 in the McAuley Center Urbana. He was born December 6, 1919 in Cable, Ohio the son of the late Tracy and Nora (Crabtree) Cowan.
Owen graduated from Salem Township High School in 1937, Kingscreek, OH. In 1942, he married Nancy Howard in Woodstock, OH. Following that, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. An avid athlete throughout his life, Owen played baseball and basketball in high school, then played semi-pro baseball in MD. He also pitched for the Navy. He won the Urbana City Bowling Championship and was also an Urbana Country Club golf champion. Owen enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. Upon his return from the war, he settled in Urbana. He sold GE appliances at the Cowan and Craig store, then, he became a self-employed electrician serving local businesses and farms. In his later years, he became well-known as a collector of Native American artifacts and postal memorabilia. Owen often expressed his love for Urbana, Ohio and Champaign County and was proud to be a charter member of the Urbana Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Farmer’s Institute in Salem Township, the Urbana Community Players, the Champaign County Historical Society, the Audubon Society and the Urbana United Methodist Church.
Surviving family includes; his wife, Nancy Cowan of Urbana; his sons, John Cowan of Urbana, Paul (Carol Hegenderfer) Cowan of Rochester, NY and Bruce Cowan of Urbana; his daughter, Amy (Frank) Ennis of Albuquerque, NM; his grandchildren, Jeff and Sara Cowan of Rochester, NY and Mandy Ennis of Albuquerque, NM.
Owen is preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Cowan Pavlik in 1992.
Following his wishes, his body will be cremated.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2009 in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Timothy West, officiating.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Champaign County Historical Society, 809 E. Lawn Ave. Urbana, Ohio 43078.
