Visitation

Monday, January 6 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Vernon Funeral Home

Paul Edward Ropp, 77, of Urbana, passed away peacefully and went home to be with his LORD and Savior on Friday, January 3, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born April 22, 1936 near Cable, Ohio to the late Elmer and Ethel Ropp.

Paul was married on December 25, 1954 to Barbara Smith of Terre Haute and the two were recently able to celebrate their 59th Wedding Anniversary. He worked at Grimes Aerospace along with working as a farmer for Jack Turner. Paul was well known for being a hard worker, as he often worked two jobs. He fondly remembers one of his favorite jobs being a milk truck driver alongside his dad. Paul retired from Midwest Express as a security guard in 2003. He loved playing ball, even coaching little league for several years in Urbana as his sons were growing up and is remembered by many as “Coach Ropp.” Paul’s greatest passion was serving others and received great pleasure in helping in any way he could. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Paul loved his siblings and immensely enjoyed their weekly coffee meetings at the donut shop and at monthly dinner gatherings that included anyone from the family that wanted to come. Many a story was told and often times they had to bring extra chairs and tables to make room for cousins and grandkids that would attend. Paul especially liked playing in euchre tournaments with his friends at Indian Lake, where he resided with his wife after retirement. In his retirement, he spent time fishing and participating in fishing tournaments as well as collecting and fixing fishing poles. He spent many hours on his lawn mower at Indian Lake where he would mow the yards of those who could not do it themselves. Paul will always be remembered for his servant heart.

He is survived by wife, Barbara of Urbana; his children, Jeffrey L. (Diana) Ropp of Iuka, IL, Cynthia R. (Patrick) Maurice of Springfield, Cheryll Lynch of St. Paris, and Tony A. (Sheryl) Ropp of Terre Haute, who lovingly took care of him in their home during his recent illness; his grandchildren, Jarrod and Kelsey Ropp, Alex Maurice, Brian, Caitlin and Erin Lynch, Toni (Tia) and Wesley Ropp, and Tyler and Jordan Laughman; his great grandchildren, Owyn Maurice, Chase and Alexis Nickells, and Dyllon and Skyler Ropp; his siblings, Robert, deceased (Fern) Ropp, Donald (Jo, deceased), Marvin “Buck” (Flossie), Roger (Patti), Barbara J. Ropp and Ronnie, deceased (Irma) Ropp, all of the Urbana area.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Elmer Jr., Leonard, Cecil, Robert, and Ronnie Ropp; his sister, Margaret “Margie” McCain; his granddaughter, Erica Rae Maurice; and his great grandson, Elijah Lee Laughman.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will follow at 12 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor David Yinger officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Urbana.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice and the many who visited, brought food, and sent cards and prayers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice, 444 West Harding Road, Springfield, OH 45504 or to the Cancer Association of Champaign County, P.O.
