Philip E. Johnson, 94 of Urbana/The Mingo Valley, passed away, Friday, August 05, 2016 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born December 4, 1921 in Mingo, Ohio. He graduated from Mingo-North Lewisburg High School. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Phil was a life-long resident of Champaign County. He spent his life working the family farm and producing maple syrup at The Johnson Maple Farm; As well as serving 20 years as a Wayne Township Trustee.
He was a member of the Mingo-North Lewisburg United Methodist Church, the Knights of Pythias, American Legion Post 238 Mechanicsburg, Life member of the Farm Bureau and a past board member of the Urbana Champaign County Senior Center. He enjoyed playing golf until the age of 93, going to the casino and traveling with Lois to sights that he thought he would never see.
He is survived by his wife, Lois LaRue South Johnson, his son, Than (Kathryn) Johnson, grandson, Lance (Amy) Johnson and their son, Cooper; step children, Jennifer South (Mike) Collins, Cheryl South (Doug) Wears, Gary, Steve and Ron Bahan, step grandsons, Josh & Luke Collins and Thomas & Jeffrey Orr, as well as several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred T. & Ruth (Gilbert) Johnson, his wives, Beatrice (Holycross) Johnson and Kay (Delaney) Bahan Johnson, his brothers, Claude Johnson and Otho Johnson and a step-son, Larry Bahan.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2016 in the FRESHWATER, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, North Lewisburg.
Funeral services to celebrate Philip’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2016 in the funeral home with his nephew, Rev. Dr. Dan Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, North Lewisburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Urbana Champaign County Senior Center, 701 Walnut St., Urbana, Ohio 43078.
