Philip Alvin Russell, age 83, of Urbana, passed away, Friday, June 10, 2011 at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana with his family by his side.

He was born April 27, 1928, in Adams Township, the son of Philip V. and Gladys (Staymen) Russell. Growing up he helped his father and brother work on farms through out Champaign Co.

Philip graduated from Concord High School in 1946. He went to work at Crowell-Collier in Springfield until 1956 when it went out of business.

On July 27, 1947, he married Betty (Hendricks) Russell. They had three children, Barbara Clifford of Springfield, Karen (Stan) Geist of Dayton and Ed (Debbie) Russell of Urbana. They were married for 17 years.

On September 17, 1966, he married Juanita (McNeely) Russell. They had two children, Brenda (Keith) Amlin of Kingscreek and Paul (Penny) Russell of Urbana. She was his helpmate, friend and caregiver. He loved her deeply. They would have celebrated their 45th anniversary this year.

He was a longtime member of the Concord United Methodist Church. He was a member of the ABC sanctioned leagues bowling teams for 50+ years.

At the age of 78, he retired from Bodey & Sons Construction, after 49 years of service. It was a job he greatly enjoyed. He built and remodeled several houses and businesses throughout Champaign Co. Most of his family has something in their homes that he built. From bedroom suites, bookcases, to kitchen cabinets, countertops, and various furniture pieces, even a custom bowling ball stand. Any idea you had, he could take it and make something ten times better than you even imagined. If he wasn’t working, he was content sitting in his recliner reading the newspaper or watching TV. He was a longtime Cincinnati Reds fan, from listening to games on the radio in the early years to watching nightly games on TV. He recently enjoyed Friday night “farkle” with his wife’s family.

Philip was a kind hearted and patient man who never spoke a harsh word about anyone. When asked, he was known for his usual response, “I Suppose”. He raised five hardworking children and was very proud of each and every one of them. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, five children, his sister; Elizabeth (Laurence) Miley of Springfield, 10 grandchildren; Melissa (Brian) Shampton of Springfield, Dustin (Ellen Dixon) Clifford of Urbana, Sara Geist of Dayton, Amy Geist of Chicago, IL, Philip (CiCi) Russell of Urbana, Anthony (Misty Werner) Russell of Urbana, Amanda Whitt of Kingscreek, Morgan (Kyle) Riley of Mechanicsburg, Kacie Amlin of Woodstock, and Megann Boyd of Urbana and 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Wilma Russell, a son-in-law, Dennis Clifford and a granddaughter, Carolanne Whitt.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 and 10-11 am on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, 235 Miami St., Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Wayne Engles officiating.
