Ralph “Junior” Ferryman, 86, of Mechanicsburg, passed away, Thursday, November 10, 2011 in Heartland of Springfield.
He was born March 27, 1925 in Tradersville, Ohio the son of Ralph “Pete” and Edna Mildred (Edwards) Ferryman.
Ralph proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the US Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. He returned from the Army and met and fell in love with his wife of sixty-five years. He retired from International Harvester with 35 years of service. Over the years he enjoyed many hobbies and interests including slow pitch softball, the Hoot Owls camping club, fishing, and wood working, as well as building several homes. He was a gifted storyteller with an excellent memory for details. In his later years Ralph became an avid reader of westerns. Ralph was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He was one of the original volunteer firefighters with the Pleasant Township Fire Department. He also volunteered at Mercy Memorial Hospital (Urbana) in the radiology department. He was a 50 year member of the Mechanicsburg Lodge # 113 F. & A. M. , High Priest in Royal Arch, and served as Worthy Patron eight times in Eastern Star Caroline Chapter. Over the last few years his biggest joy in life came from spending time with his great grandsons who brought so much happiness to him. He was simply the best husband, father, and grandfather and was treasured by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ferryman, daughter, Cheryl J. (Kenneth) Fluty of Mechanicsburg, a granddaughter, Kellie D. (William J.) Clark of Springfield, his great grandsons, Braeden, Evan and Keagen, who are his heart and soul. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann (William) Bowshier of Mechanicsburg, sister-in-laws, Thelma Edwards and Ann (Richard) Runyan and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson, Michael, his brothers, Donald and Roger Ferryman, his sister, Nancy Adams and a brother-in-law, John (Ted) Edwards.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2011 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg; where Masonic services will follow at 6:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2011 in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Harley Roston officiating.
Burial will follow in McConkey Cemetery.
The family would also like to thank the staff of the Senior Independence Hospice and Heartland of Springfield for their care and kindness during his illness.
