Robert Henry ”Bob” Grimes, 88, of Mechanicsburg passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012 in Sterling House of Urbana.
He was born July 17, 1923 in Dayton, Ohio, the son of John W. ”Bud” and Emma Mae (Knox) Grimes.
Robert married Dorothy D. Bush on March 18, 1963. He served his country in the United States Army in Company ‘B’ 141st Field Artillary. Robert was in the CCC where he worked in the west and midwest building roads and bridges. He served in WWII and was stationed in Northern Africa and Sicily, Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service at Anzio Beach Head, Italy. Robert was a member of the Mechanicsburg United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 238 in Mechanicsburg, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V., Springfield Post # 9634. He had a dry sense of humor, a quick smile, was hard working and was honored to serve his country. Robert enjoyed gardening and his daughter is certain that he is already laying out plans for a new building in Heaven.
He is survived by his daughter, Joni (Joe) Fejes of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Tyre Dawn (Zach) Fairbanks of Bethel, Alaska; great grandchild, Lukyan Dax of Bethel, Alaska; niece, Gloria Jean Collier; extended family, Mika Lynn Collier (Mike Bowen), Rodney, Steve and Preston Collier, Deven, Joe, Drayton and Rhyli Dixon.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy Grimes; sister, Virginia Howe.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Sterling House of Urbana, especially Julia, Tania, Tasha, Lori, Sandra, Marshall and Charlie, and to Heartland Hospice Care, especially Kim for the loving care they provided.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home with Chaplain Mitch Pollic officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Bowen, Danny Gaver, Joe Dixon, Rodney Collier, Steve Collier and Preston Collier. Honorary pallbearer will be Drayton Dixon.
