Robert P. Sherman, 76 of Mechanicsburg, passed away, Saturday, March 13, 2010 in Mercy McAuley Center in Urbana.
He was born April 29, 1933 in Paintsville, Kentucky. Bob served his country in the United States Airforce in Germany.
He retired from International Harvester / Navistar in 1990 after 33 years of service. He was a member Hickory Grove United Baptist Church. Bob enjoyed spending time with his coffee group, fishing, playing the guitar and was an accomplished photography. Bob volunteered for many years at the Mercy McAuley Center and spoke as an advocate for Alzheimer’s. He was the Mayor of Mutual for over 20 years; as well as a member of the Mechanicsburg Masonic Lodge, #113 F&AM.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dissie (VanHoose) Sherman, his sons, Phillip W. (Betty) Sherman of Urbana, David P. (Becky) Sherman of McConnelsville, Ohio and Gary (Julie) Hill of Urbana; his grandchildren, Alexander Sherman, Duke Sherman, Alyza Sherman, Abbey (Scott) Delong, Zach (Greta) Sherman, Emily Sherman, Heather Merritt, Jessica (Eli) Burchfield, Luke Sherman & Eli Sherman, his great grandchildren, Hanna, Addie, Mylee, Madison, Camden & Breyonna; his sisters, Janet Shipley of Mechanicsburg, Brenda (Gale) Dixon of Mechanicsburg and Judy (Rick) Michael of Arlington, Texas; his brothers, Bert (Dianne) Sherman of Mechanicsburg, Ed (Goldie) Sherman of Auburn, Indiana,
Lowell (Barbara) Sherman of Arlington, Texas, and Terry (Julie) Sherman of Mechanicsburg; his sister-in-laws, Eloise Sherman of Wayne, West Virginia and Mary Sherman of Mechanicsburg; his brother-in-laws, Roger Fultz of Urbana and Larry Hampton of Anitoch, TN.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ervin & Dixie (Rice) Sherman; his brothers, Richard, Bill and James “Benny” Sherman; his sisters, Betty Pack, Glendine Fultz, Jane Tull and Vonnie Hampton.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg; with Masonic services following at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the Hickory Grove United Baptist Church with the Elder Patrick Gillium officiating.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mutual. Serving as pall bearers will be his grandchildren.
