Robert (Bob) Sweet of Urbana passed away on Tuesday August 16, 2011 in Springfield Ohio; he was 68 years old. Bob was born in Ashland, Ohio in 1943 to Robert and Elizabeth (Fanello) Sweet. He lived in Westerville, Ohio for 32 years, and in Urbana, Ohio for the past 7 years.
The best years of Bob’s childhood were spent living with his grandparents, Pete and Nina, on their farm in Ashland County. He loved basketball; at 6 ½ feet tall, he was an accomplished player in high school and at Miami University. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1961 and from Ashland College in 1969. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary (Stahl), in 1967 and was loved dearly by her parents Bill and Ruth. Bob and Mary’s twin sons, Simon and Jacob, were born in 1971 and their daughter, Elizabeth, in 1979.
Bob dedicated his life to caring for his family and providing services to people in need. He earned a Master’s degree in Health Education and Addictions and Dependencies from Columbia University in 1971. He was the founder and president of CompDrug Corporation, a substance abuse treatment center in Columbus Ohio, and Youth to Youth, a drug prevention program for youth. Bob cared deeply for his community and the people who worked with him. Through his passion and generosity, he touched the lives of countless people.
Bob’s love for his family was boundless. From family vacations in Florida and biking around New York City, to quiet evenings watching TV, holidays together and just everyday life, his family’s greatest joys were spent with him. He is survived by his wife and children; their spouses, Megan, Emily, and Doug; his grandchildren Aidan, Olivia, and Adira; two brothers, Jeff and Jerry, and their families. They will miss and love him every day.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday August 21, 2011 at the VERNON FUNERAL HOME in Urbana, Ohio. The family will receive friends following the service.
