Robert A. “Bob” Thorpe, 78 of Urbana, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 in his home with his wife by his side.
He was born May 9, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio the son of Charles M. and Nellie (Rinehart) Thorpe.

Bob was a 1954 graduate of Centerburg High School. He was a very patriotic man; he served his country in the United States Army as a SP4 in Korea. He was a member of the Urbana United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years, as well as a member of the Pearce-Kerns American Legion Post #120 and the Republican Club. He enjoyed reading, fishing, his cats and making latch hook rugs.

Bob was the owner of Carich Ford Tractor in Springfield for 42 years. After retiring, he still would keep in contact with many of his customers who farmed in the area. He served as council man at large for 12 years. He loved his family and having family gatherings. He took great pride and joy in his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy (Hankins) Thorpe; his daughter, Pamela Sue Thorpe of Urbana; his sons, Rob Thorpe of Urbana and Charlie (Tammy) Thorpe of Sarasota, FL, his grandchildren, Lyndsay (Tyler) Bumbalough, Shelby Thorpe and Zack Thorpe, his brother, Jim Thorpe of Centerburg, OH, his sister, Mildred Ice of Sewickley, PA and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marion Locke.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in the Urbana United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana. Serving as pallbearers will be Rob Thorpe, Charles Thorpe, Zack Thorpe, Steve Locke, Gary Lantz, Kirt Brugel, Marty Hess, and Tyler Bumbalough. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Thorpe, George Thatcher, Larry Berner, Terry McGuire, Terry Hart, and Boyd McCarty.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Urbana Police Dept. Angel Christmas Tree Fund, The Where House, 238 N. Main St., Urbana, Ohio 43078, Community Mercy Hospice, 444 W. Harding Rd., Springfield, Ohio 45503 and the Cancer Association of Champaign County, P.O. Box 38125, Urbana, Ohio 43078.

I am so sorry for your loss! Mr. Thorpe was such a sweet man! I sold him his last few vehicles at White’s. I always enjoyed when he came in to see me. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
