Ronald E. “Doc” Shonkwiler, 60 of Mechanicsburg, passed away, Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in his residence surrounded by his family.
Ron was born September 30, 1948 in Columbus, Ohio the son of George Jr. & Marilyn Jane (Phillips) Shonkwiler. Ron was a 1966 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School. During his school years he enjoyed playing sports; Ron was on the first Mechanicsburg golf team. Throughout the rest of his life his continue involvement with sports, was playing, coaching or cheering on his children & grandchildren.
After graduation Ron met his soul mate, Brinda Wood and they were married August 5, 1967. Shortly after they were married Ron was drafted into the Army. He left in October of 1968 to serve his country proudly as a combat medic in the United States Army during Vietnam. Ron earned the US Army combat medic badge, M-14 and M-16 expert shooting badges and many other Army decorations.
Ron served in the past on the Mechanicsburg Village Council, was the Vice President of the Spanish American relocation project and past Vice President of the Mechanicsburg Booster Club; as well as the founder of the national museum of the US Army.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #238, Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall, 25th Infantry Division Association and the Vietnam Veteran’s of America.
Ron will be greatly missed by those he coached, his friends and his loving family.
Ron is survived by his mother, Marilyn Shonkwiler, his loving wife of 42 years, Brinda L. Shonkwiler, his daughters, Amanda “Mandy” (Ken) Frost and Nicole “Nikki” (Brian) Shoemaker, his grandchildren, Kyle, Chrissy & Tyler Bossetti and Derik & Joel Frost all of Mechanicsburg; Gary (Rene) Shonkwiler & Tim (Kelsey) Shonkwiler both of Mechanicsburg and Robert (Janice) Shonkwiler of North Lewisburg, his sisters, Georgeanne (Daril) Lewis of North Lewisburg and Polly Shonkwiler of Mechanicsburg, nieces & nephews, Leslie (Jeremy) Massie, Marlana Shonkwiler, Eric Shonkwiler, Jamie (Nikki) Adams, Charlie Lewis, Ian Ainsworth, Marah Ainsworth, Conner Massie, Toby Massie and PJ Shonkwiler; as well as many cousins and friends.
Ron is preceded in death by his father, his maternal grandparents, Ron and Pauline (Trainer) Phillips, his paternal grandparents, George Sr. & Eunice (Harrington) Shonkwiler.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Ron’s special hospice nurse, Katie Buchanan for her wonderful care.
A gathering of family & friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2009 in the SKILLMAN, MCDONALD & VERNON Funeral Home Mechanicsburg. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009 in the funeral home with Pastor Brian Massie officiating.
Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Mechanicsburg. Military honors will be provided by the Mechanicsburg American Legion Post # 238 and the Urbana American Legion Post. Serving as pall bearers, Gary Shonkwiler, Tim Shonkwiler, Jim Dunlap, Ed Fatla, Mike Edwards and Roger Baldwin; honorary pallbearers, Bob Early and Bill Scheible, who were Ron’s close friends; also serving as honorary pallbearers, Bob Martin, John Marpo & Jim Leaf, killed in action in 1969, Dick Dagger & Bill Shaffer killed in action in 1968 and Bob Reed killed in action in 1966.
