RUSSELL WELLMAN, 80 of Urbana, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. Russell was born on February 16, 1936 in Lawrence County Kentucky to Eileen and Dave Wellman.
Russ was a graduate of Springfield South High School. He worked and trained as a Registered Medical Technologist (AMT) at Mercy Medical Center 1957-1960, a Chief Technologist at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana from 1960-1973, and a Senior Technologist at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine from 1974-1979. Russ is also known for teaching many folks in Champaign County how to drive as the owner of Wellman’s Driving School, April 1975-2005. Most recently Russ was employed at the Champaign County Health Department as an Environmental Tech from 1989-2016.
Russ also served in the Ohio National Guard from 1956-1960 in the 136th FA BN Service Battalion.
He enjoyed working in his yard, golfing, supporting the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Cavaliers, and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Helen (Ruth) Wellman, his wife of 61 years, his daughters, Robbin (Brian) Nicol and Tonya (Ed) Evans, his grandchildren Cory Nicol, Andy Nicol, Emily Evans and Katie Evans, his brother Lee (Wanda) Wellman and several special nephews and nieces.
Russ is preceded in death by his father and mother Dave and Eileen Wellman and sister Phyllis Simmons.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2016 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 in the funeral home with Rev. Nancy Hardin officiating.
Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio.
