Sheryl Lee "Sherry" Virts, 73, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018 in the James Cancer Hospital, Columbus.
She was born September 3, 1944 in Bellefontaine, the daughter of William Strayer Brown and Florence (Taylor) Hurley. She was a graduate of the first class of West Liberty Salem High School, Urbana Junior College where she was valedictorian of her class, and Wright State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Sherry taught math at Urbana High School for 20 years before her retirement. She was a member of the Retired Teachers of Champaign County, Champaign County Historical Society, Champaign County Preservation Alliance, Buck Creek Women's Club, Champaign County Northeast Farm Council #9, the First Baptist Church of Urbana, and the vocal group Guys and Dolls.
Sherry and her husband Dick were awarded a National Community Service Award from the Champaign County Chapter of the DAR in 2015. Sherry very much enjoyed her volunteer work at the Urbana Champaign County Senior Center preparing income tax returns for people in the community. She was a lifelong avid collector of antiques and "stuff".
Sherry is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charles Richard Virts; her daughter, Jill (Keith) Kessler of Mechanicsburg; her son, David (Tracey) Virts of Marysville; her grandchildren, Tate Christian Virts and Olivia Lauren Virts; her brother, William (Kay) Brown; her sisters, Carol Baker, Susie Spires and Jenny McCumber; and her 11 nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Esther (Teach) Brown; and her sister, Mikela Schmidt.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 in the First Baptist Church, Urbana, with Pastor Brian Wonn officiating. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service from 11-1.
