Sylvan M. “Rawhide” Holbrook, 77, of Cable passed away, Monday, January 11, 2010 in Mercy McAuley Center, Urbana.


He was born June 13, 1932 in Urbana, the son of Silas and Lucy Belle (Huffman) Holbrook. Syl served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Retired from Johnson Welded Products in Urbana. Syl enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing euchre. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.


He is survived by his daughters, Rhonda (Lewis) Crawford of Urbana & Betsy (Don) Collins of Mingo, his sons, Jim (Vivian) Holbrook of Altamonte Springs, Florida, Bob Holbrook of Springfield, Lenny (Patti) Holbrook of St. Paris, his grandchildren, Adam (Theresa), Ryan & Austin Crawford, Shiloh (Abe) Dotson, Kyle & Adrianna Collins, Jill & J.D. Holbrook, Terra McGinnis, Jordan & Jaylin Holbrook, Leslie Holbrook; great grandchildren, Leiney Tillman, Novalee and Brayden Dotson, Alexis, Austin, Allister and Aaron McGinnis, his step grandchildren, Jose, Carlos, Victor, Roberto & Beverly, great grandchildren, Joshua & Victor Julian, his brother, Tracy (Gail) Holbrook of Michigan, as well as several nieces & nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Janet (Allison) Holbrook, his brothers, Jim & Max, his sisters, Delilah, Florence, Berneda & Audrey.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 2010 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Jim Chess officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.


The family would like to express their gratitude for the compassionate care given to their father by both the nurses and the staff at Mercy McAuley Center, Mercy Memorial Hospital, ICU and Community Mercy Hospice. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice, 1343 North Fountain
