Thomas W. “Tom” Dennis, 79 of Brooksville, FL. formerly of Mechanicsburg passed away March 19, 2015 in Heartland of Urbana. He was born September 7, 1935 in Fostoria, OH, the son of the late Louis and Delores (Hilditch) Dennis.
Tom proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of St. Frances of Cabrini Church in Brooksville, FL. He enjoyed boating on Lake Erie, fishing and golf. Tom and Helen, after retiring, were fortunate to travel and visit all 50 states. They loved camping; and Tom served as president of two camping associations. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, AARP Chapter, and was a Lifetime Member of the American Legion.
He was adored by his family; he was a wonderful husband, Dad, grandpa and coach.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 45 years and just renewed their vows, Helen F. Dennis of Brooksville, FL; his daughters, Karen (David) West of Urbana, Theresa (Stan) Miller of Vancouver, WA, and Janice Pitts of Columbus; his sons, David Dennis of Springfield, Robert Dennis of Florida, and Thomas Dennis of Colorado; his 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; his sister, Virginia Wilson; his brothers, James Dennis, Louis Dennis, and Michael Dennis of Toledo; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sherlee Blackburn; his son, John Dennis; and his brother, Richard Dennis.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 23 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the Cancer Association of Champaign County, P.O. Box 32185, Urbana, Ohio 43078. Tom and Helen were good friends, we shared many happy hours together traveling in our RV’s. We are sorry to hear of his passing, may he rest in peace. Prayers are sent for the family.
We were honored to know Tom. We enjoyed going camping with him and Helen. He taught Andy a lot about camping. We will miss him. Thoughts and prayers go out to Helen and family.
