Thomas E. Hayes, 91, of Urbana, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. Thomas Edward was born July 16, 1921 in Canton, OH and was a 1939 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He attended the University of Cincinnati until drafted by the United States Army in 1942 to serve his country during WWII, where he was stationed in the Philippines. After returning from the war, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1946 and continued his education earning his Master’s Degree in Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1948. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Johnson (Penn) Controls in Goshen, IN and retired in 1987 as Manager of Applied Research holding 20 patents. As a hobby, he built four large reflecting telescopes. He donated to Middlebury High School, IN the largest, which contained a 15” hand-grounded mirror.
While attending Washington University, Thomas met St. Louis born and bred, Esther Ruby Meiners, whom he married August 24, 1946. Thomas and Esther were the parents of 4 sons: Thomas David (Marlene) Hayes of Schaumburg, IL, John Edwin (Patricia) Hayes of Indianapolis, IN, James Nelson (Dixie) Hayes of Urbana, OH and Paul Allan (Gayle) Hayes of Columbus, IN; grandparents of: Thomas Andrew Hayes, Kimberly Beth (Brian) Gurak, Bryan Matthew (April) Hayes, Jessica Sue (John) Ruiz-Bueno, Brandon Michael Hayes, Sarah Jane (Timothy) Badgett and Philip David (Lauren) Hayes; great-grandparents of: John Charles ”Charlie” Ruiz-Bueno IV and Gabriella Jane Badgett; expectant great-grandparents of Baby Gurak; Heavenly Grandparents to Joshua Samuel James Hayes; and Heavenly Great-Grandparents to Baby R-B.
Thomas is preceded in death by: his parents, James Nelson and Pearl (Davis) Hayes; his wife of almost 65 years, Esther Ruby (Meiners) Hayes; his brother, James Hayes; and his sister, Mary (Hayes) Lavender.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012 in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana with Pastor Clifford Kissinger officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Pearce Kerns American Legion Post #120. Condolences may be made to the family at www.vernonfh.com.
