William Richard “Dick” Shipley 77, of Urbana, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 30, 2010, in Miami Valley Hospital Dayton following a stroke.


He was born September 20, 1932, in Catawba, Ohio the son of William Alwyn & Leah Marguerite (Kennedy) Shipley.


Dick was a 1950 graduate of Salem Local High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. After graduation, he joined the family farming business – Rosemere Farms. He and his father raised and showed registered Holstein dairy cattle for several decades. After he retired from farming, he worked for NEX Transport Inc. Dick was a lifetime member of the National and the Ohio Holstein Friesian Association. He was a member of Harmony Lodge # 8 F&AM
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, and other outdoor activities, caring for animals and collecting small antique tools.


He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eleanor Lee (Dixon) Shipley, his son, William Gregory (Linda) Shipley and his daughter, Melanie Sue Shipley; his sisters, Margery (William) Carey, Laura Evilsizor & Sharyn Edelen; mother-in-law, Ruby Dixon, sister-in-law, Peggy Wilkins and several nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, George H. Dixon, his nephew, Christopher Evilsizor, and his brothers-in-law, Robert Edelen and Tom D. Wilkins.


Following his wishes his body was cremated.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana, where a memorial service will follow at 8:00 p.m.


Private graveside services will be held by the family in the Shipley family lot in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Clark County Division, 5455 N. High St. Columbus, OH 43214 or to the PAWS Animal shelter 1535 U.S. 36 Urbana, Ohio 43044.
